Embedding Finite Metric Spaces in Low Dimension

چکیده

This paper presents novel techniques that allow the solution to several open problems regarding embedding of finite metric spaces into Lp. We focus on proving near optimal bounds on the dimension with which arbitrary metric spaces embed into Lp. The dimension of the embedding is of very high importance in particular in applications and much effort has been invested in analyzing it. However, no previous result improved the bound on the dimension which can be derived from Bourgain’s embedding. We prove that any metric space on n points embeds into Lp with distortion O(log n) in dimension O(log n). This provides an optimal bound on the dimension of the embedding. Somewhat surprisingly, we show that a further small improvement is possible at a small price in the distortion, obtaining an embedding with distortion O(log n) in optimal dimension O(θ−1 log n/ log log n), for any θ > 0. It is worth noting that with the small loss in the distortion this improves upon the best known embedding of arbitrary spaces into Euclidean space, where dimension reduction is used. Our techniques also allow to obtain the optimal distortion for embedding into Lp with nearly optimal dimension. For any 1 ≤ p ≤ ∞ and any 1 ≤ k ≤ p, we give an embedding into Lp with distortion O(dlog n/ke) in dimension 2 log n.

A Novel Approach to Embedding of Metric Spaces

An embedding of one metric space (X, d) into another (Y, ρ) is an injective map f : X → Y . The central genre of problems in the area of metric embedding is finding such maps in which the distances between points do not change “too much”. Metric Embedding plays an important role in a vast range of application areas such as computer vision, computational biology, machine learning, networking, st...

Lipschitz and Path Isometric Embeddings of Metric Spaces

We prove that each sub-Riemannian manifold can be embedded in some Euclidean space preserving the length of all the curves in the manifold. The result is an extension of Nash C Embedding Theorem. For more general metric spaces the same result is false, e.g., for Finsler non-Riemannian manifolds. However, we also show that any metric space of finite Hausdorff dimension can be embedded in some Eu...

Embedding Levy Families into Banach Spaces

We prove that if a metric probability space with a usual concentration property embeds into a finite dimensional Banach space X , then X has a Euclidean subspace of a proportional dimension. In particular this yields a new characterization of weak cotype 2. We also find optimal lower estimates on embeddings of metric spaces with concentration properties into l ∞, generalizing estimates of Bourg...

Finite Metric Spaces and Their Embedding into Lebesgue Spaces

The properties of the metric topology on infinite and finite sets are analyzed. We answer whether finite metric spaces hold interest in algebraic topology, and how this result is generalized to pseudometric spaces through the Kolmogorov quotient. Embedding into Lebesgue spaces is analyzed, with special attention for Hilbert spaces, `p, and EN .

Minimal bi-Lipschitz embedding dimension of ultrametric spaces

We prove that an ultrametric space can be bi-Lipschitz embedded in R if its metric dimension in Assouad’s sense is smaller than n. We also characterize ultrametric spaces up to bi-Lipschitz homeomorphism as dense subspaces of ultrametric inverse limits of certain inverse sequences of discrete spaces.
